FIREFIGHTERS & FIRST RESPONDERS

SAINT FLORIAN

PROTECTOR OF FIREFIGHTERS & FIRST RESPONDERS, AGAINST FIRE/DROWNING/FLOODING

Feast Day:  May 4  International Firefighters Day (IFFD)

(AD 250) This highly esteemed Commander of the Imperial Roman Army in Austria organized and trained elite groups of soldiers whose sole duty was to fight fires.  He was executed for refusing to renounce his Faith and for defying orders to persecute his fellow Christians.

FIREFIGHTERS BADGE: St. Florian’s Cross is derived from the Maltese Cross of the great Knights of St. John of Malta (AD 1096) who underwent danger and death from fire bombs thrown at them during the wars to save Europe. It is the worldwide protection symbol of Firefighters and First Responders.

St. Florian was twice scourged, half-flayed alive, set on fire and thrown into the river Enns with a stone around neck.

“The Maltese Cross is a  firefighter’s badge of honour, signifying that he works in courage - a ladder rung away from death.”
